A group of travelers known as the Vagellans are devoted to uncovering hidden erotic imagery in architecture. Recently, the group has flocked to St. Matthew’s Church in New York to view a stained-glass window depicting Satan with a massive erection taunting a kneeling St. Peter, as well as to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., where they found a carving of U.S. President Richard Nixon with a bomb lodged in his rectum.

Their latest and most unexpected discovery, however, was made at Schellenger’s Restaurant in Wildwood. Open since 1978, only recently has it been observed that a pirate statue perched atop its roof—apparently engaged in sexual congress with a pig.

Christian Karros, owner of Schellenger’s, shared the family history behind the building’s design. “The architect we hired suggested a ship theme to honor our family’s seafaring background. The ship on top of the restaurant represents my grandfather James Karros’s time in the Coast Guard. I suppose the pirate pounding that pig’s rear symbolizes my great-uncle Tiberious, who had a peg leg after stepping on a mine in World War I and ate bacon every day of his life.”

Vagellans have traveled from as far as Australia and Asia to photograph the infamous rooftop scene. Wang Sooka of Osaka, Japan, flew more than 20 hours to see the legendary pig. She also engaged with Wildwood culture firsthand—an experience that included being robbed at knifepoint.
